First Barsi Concert @APCA
Sur Aaur Saaz presented the First Memorial (Barsi ) Concert of my dearest parents Ila and Devinder Pal on this Sunday, 26th January 2020.
We began the Republic Day celebrations with the unfurling of the National flag by enthusiastic elders and youngsters, singing ‘Jana Gana Mana’, ‘Ae mere Watan ke logon’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ spiritedly. Wonderful musician friends Tauseef Akhtar, Kiranpal Singh & Samir and Dipalee Date performed in the presence of well known artists – Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Pandit Satish Vyas, prominent dignitaries & good friends – Himadriben Nanavati, Yoginiben Sheth, Pallavi Choksi, Dr Usha Krishna, Durga Parikh, Nalin & Jayashree Shah, Mahesh Sharma, Vivek Joshi, Ahsan Ahmed to name a few.
The venue was the Anuradha Pal’s Cultural Academy – APCA. This exclusive space has classic old furniture and priceless artifacts of regal splendor. The concert space is warm and unplugged, with baithak seating, some chairs and minimal unobtrusive miking, so as to create an exclusive experience of being able to interact & enjoy a close, listening & learning experience with great musicians.
We had a full house and aficionados came on time and stayed till the very end. Santoor Maestro Kiranpal Singhji regaled the audience by presenting a beautiful Kirwani and Kaunsi Kanhada in Rupak & Teentaal. I was very touched to hear my college buddy & ghazal singer, Tauseefbhai speak so fondly of my parents and how my mother would continuously feed him when he came home to practice . Tauseefbhai sang 2 beautiful patriotic ghazals written by Veer Savarkar in Urdu.. Good friends Samir & Dipali Date sang some marathi Abhangs as well as classical old songs in Raag Yaman. I enjoyed accompanying all four of them on Tabla, performing from 5 to 8pm without break!!
I am grateful to my dear friends Pradeep & Nargis Gidwani, Ajit & Tejaswini Bhatt, Bhawana & Prashant Bhatnagar for helping us serve the guests all the delicious snacks, while my dear husband Shyam Sharma looked after each guest personally in his charming style. My student Tushar managed the sound and stage arrangements very well, while Shyam took care of all the venue logistical & hygiene details to make the experience of listening to music in a baithak setting, very special, fragrant & royal & exclusive!! My team members Prashant & Roshan managed all other arrangements flawlessly..
It was a memorable evening with friends & family, musicians & music lovers paying tribute to our parents and our great country.. I have been getting so many calls and messages from everyone who came that day.. My heartfelt thanks to all my friends, fans and well wishers for your immense love & support.
Our next baithak will be on Sunday, 9th February. Do mark your calendars for this big event!!
